Fr. Frank,

Thank you for responding so thoughtfully to this. When I read the resolution and then Ms. Allen's charges, this is exactly what I was thinking, that it endorsed a particular theory of atonement.

This peice has bothered me ever since I read it yesterday. Speaking of Beliefnet, I spend a great deal of my time on Christian to Christian debate--which I shouldn't. What bothers me about this is that I see a faction of the church attempting to foist some of the certainty of Fundamentalism on our church and this smacks of it. I see it as an attempt to strike at the very heart of our Anglican tradition of being a creedal church centered on praying together rather than a confessional church, a straight-jacket of "right belief." It is, in my mind, the greatest thing about this Church. What I hope is that another attempt is made at the next GC--not to pass this one, but to pass one that spells out this freedom to allow ambiguity, discussion and all possible theology concerning how we view Jesus as the way, the truth and the life.

Well said. The format of our GC makes us an easy target for such mischaracterizations. My experience at GC was that the heart of our Church if very "orthodox" in terms of a shared creedal faith. There are many whose job would be much easier if we weren't.

Grace and Peace,
Joe
